Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic Therapy offers unique benefits to people recovering from injury or illness. It is a natural alternative to the traditional land-based rehabilitation that some people may find difficult or painful. Water-based therapy takes advantage of the properties of water to produce a therapeutic outcome:
Buoyancy ounters the effects of gravity, reduces joint pain and eases the movement of arms and legs.
Sensory Input Gentle stimulation to the whole body from the constant motion of the water.
Resistance Produced by the turbulence of the water and the persons movement. Builds strength and endurance and improves balance.
Compression Gentle compression of the arms and legs by the water increases fluid return toward the heart and helps decrease swelling.
Aquatic Therapy
VS. Exercise Classes
Aquatic Therapy offers more than a general water exercise class. The therapist works with the client to identify his/her specific needs. Some of the more common conditions that are treated in an aquatic environment include:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Athletic injuries
- Back pain/post back surgery
- Cardiac Bypass Surgery
- Fibromyalgia
- Guillain-Barre
- Joint replacement (hip, knee, shoulder)
- Lymphedema
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Osteoporosis
- Stroke and other neurological conditions
